An emotive reunion in Sicily, guided by Concetta

I live in Mexico DF with my wife and four children. We usually visit my parents in Guadalajara for Christmas and summer holidays. However, during a phone call with my mother last spring, she surprised me with the news that our next reunion would be in Italy. She explained that they, along with my three uncles from Mexico City, had reconnected with an old family friend who had immigrated to Sicily in the 1970s. They wished to meet in person after all these years.

I reserved tickets for my wife, our children, my parents, my three uncles, and their partners—a total of 14 people. Given our large group, I also booked rooms at the Grand Hotel Wagner and hired a private chauffeur with a minibus for our 10-day stay in Sicily.

Concetta greeted us at Palermo airport with youthful enthusiasm and fluent Spanish, immediately putting us at ease. She skilfully managed our voluminous luggage and took us to our hotel. After we were comfortably checked in on our rooms, our first request was to visit Sant’Elia, a traditional fishing village where my mother’s childhood friend, Juana, lived. The reunion was touching, with Juana, despite her nearly 90 years, radiating energy and joy.

We spent ten wonderful days exploring Palermo and its surroundings, completely entrusting Concetta with our itinerary. Each morning, she picked us up in the luxurious minibus, which featured a minibar, coffee machine, and massage seats among other amazing amenities. We collected Juana and set off on scenic drives, marvelling at Sicily’s beauty from the comfort of the minibus. Concetta also secured us the best tables at exclusive seaside restaurants, making our meals as memorable as the views. Every afternoon, we returned Juana to her charming home, and Concetta promised even more spectacular routes for the next day.

As our holiday ended, we bid a heartfelt farewell to Juana, who gifted us a beautiful piece of Caltagirone ceramics. Concerned about its safety during our trip back to Mexico, we asked Concetta to ship it for us, and she gladly took care of the arrangements.

Concetta’s dedication and warmth made our Sicilian holiday unforgettable. Her impeccable Spanish and insightful guidance turned an already fantastic holiday into an incredible experience, ensuring that our family reunion in Sicily was beyond our expectations.
