After moving from Seattle to San Francisco earlier this year, my wife and I were thrilled to see how well our children, Martha (7), Jacob (9), and Harry (12), had adapted. Their grades had improved, and they had embraced our new home with enthusiasm. To celebrate their resilience, we planned a surprise weekend trip to Washington, D.C.
Our adventure began at Ronald Reagan DCA airport, where we were greeted by our chauffeur, Gilberto Jr. His car gleamed under the afternoon sun, adding to the excitement. He drove us to the Hay-Adams Hotel, waiting patiently as we checked in and freshened up before driving us downtown for dinner.
The next morning, Gilberto Jr. took us to the National Mall. Our main destination was the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, a place Harry had dreamed of visiting. Our chauffeur’s insightful explanations about the city’s history and culture kept the children engaged and curious.
We explored the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Capitol, but the highlight of our day was the National Cathedral. Gilberto Jr. surprised us by pointing out a stone grotesque on the façade, depicting Darth Vader. The children’s eyes widened in amazement, their admiration for Gilberto Jr. soaring. It was a magical moment that left us all smiling.
As our weekend ended, Gilberto Jr. drove us back to the airport. Reflecting on our trip, we were grateful for the unforgettable memories created, knowing this weekend in the capital would be cherished by our family for years to come.
“Guiding this wonderful family through D.C. was a joy. Seeing the children’s excitement and awe made the journey unforgettable. Moments like these remind me why I love what I do.”
