Top 10 worst cities for driving: lost hours and economic costs

INRIX’s 2023 Global Traffic Scorecard provides three years of data on traffic congestion and its impact. This report takes into account aspects such as lost hours and their economic cost, analyzing productivity losses and additional fuel expenses in more than 900 cities and 37 countries.

Based on these and other factors, this report by traffic analyst Bob Pishue, published in June 2024, ranks the cities with the worst traffic in the world:

  1. New York: the first place is for the city that never sleeps. With a total of 101 hours lost behind the wheel due to traffic and costing more than $1,700. Today, the New York metropolitan area is more congested than in pre-pandemic times.
  2. Mexico City: in second place, up two spots from the previous year, is Mexico City with 96 hours of delays. Despite fewer hours lost to traffic, the city’s ranking is influenced by congestion relative to its population.
  3. London: this British city ranks third globally. Its traffic congestion causes a loss of 99 hours, accounting for nearly 50% of all hours lost in the UK. Despite holding the top spot among European cities, London has fallen from second to third in the world rankings, mainly due to increased public transport usage over the past year.
  4. Paris: second in the European ranking and fourth globally, Parisian drivers lose 97 hours to traffic jams and congestion. Despite this, Paris has dropped one spot in the world ranking compared to the previous year.
  5. Chicago: another major U.S. city is Chicago, ranking second in the U.S. Here, drivers experienced 96 hours of delays, with an estimated cost of $1,672 per driver.
  6. Istanbul: leading the Turkish rankings, experiences a total of 91 hours lost due to congestion. Similar to New York and Chicago, the city has seen an increase in traffic compared to the pre-COVID era.
  7. Los Angeles: as the largest city in the country and the second most populous, it’s no surprise that Los Angeles ranks among the top 10 worst cities to drive in. Drivers face 89 hours of delays, with a cost of $1,545 per driver.
  8. Boston: the capital of Massachusetts is another U.S. city on this list, with a total of 88 hours lost to traffic, costing drivers in Boston approximately $1,543 each.
  9. Cape Town: along with Jakarta, is one of the cities with the largest increase in hours lost to traffic jams. In South Africa’s legislative capital, 83 hours were wasted, a 32% rise from the previous year. Despite being the second most populous city in South Africa, Cape Town ranks first in the country, ahead of Johannesburg.
  10. Jakarta: one of the most populous cities in the world and Indonesia’s industrial and financial capital, saw 65 hours lost to traffic congestion, a 33% increase from the previous period.

The INRIX report also analyzes the busiest corridors and peak hours in each city, coinciding in most cases in the early morning between 7:00 and 8:00, and in the afternoon between 15:00 and 17:00.

Choose a chauffeured private transportation and don’t worry about mobility

One of the downsides of navigating congested areas is the added stress and fatigue. Getting stuck in traffic, uncertain of when you’ll reach your destination, can be very frustrating.

Moreover, prolonged periods without progress can lead to distractions and absent-mindedness among drivers, raising the risk of accidents. For this reason, at Drivania Chauffeurs, we understand that having a private chauffeur-driven vehicle can help make navigating busy cities during rush hour significantly less chaotic.

If you are on a business trip for a few days or just a few hours, your schedule is likely full of appointments that you need to keep on time. Having a private chauffeur waiting for you at the agreed time to handle the trips between your business meetings or events will ensure that you always arrive on time.

You will be assigned an experienced driver familiar with the area, who will be aware of the traffic situation in advance and choose alternative routes and shortcuts as needed. They will also advise you on the best times to visit certain places to avoid crowds and can even make reservations at tourist attractions on your behalf. In short, having a reliable person by your side to handle all the details allows you to focus on exploring the city and enjoying your vacation.
