America’s Cup returns to Barcelona: a new era begins with the first Puig Women’s America’s Cup

The summer advances in Barcelona, and the city gets ready to host one of the most prestigious sailing events: the 37th America’s Cup, starting on August 22nd. This historic event, which dates back to 1851, is the oldest international competition still operating in any sport. But what marks this year’s edition as exceptional is the debut of the first-ever Puig Women’s America’s Cup, set to change the face of competitive sailing.

A legacy of excellence

The America’s Cup has always been a top achievement in sailing. First held off the coast of England, the race has evolved, showcasing cutting-edge technology and the world’s best sailors. The New York Yacht Club held the trophy for 132 years before losing it to Australia in 1983. Since then, teams from the United States, Switzerland, and New Zealand have won the Cup. Currently, Emirates Team New Zealand holds the title.

This year, the America’s Cup returns to Barcelona, an Olympic city well known for its versatility and stunning views. The races will take place around Port Vell and Port Olimpic, offering spectators thrilling action against a beautiful backdrop.

A new chapter: the Puig Women’s America’s Cup

One of the most exciting parts of this year’s America’s Cup is the introduction of the Puig Women’s America’s Cup, from October 5th to 13th. This event is the first dedicated women’s regatta in the history of the America’s Cup, showing a strong commitment to gender equality in sports.

Puig, a leading name in the beauty and fashion industry, sponsors this landmark event, their involvement empowering women and promoting diversity in sailing.

Empowering women through sailing

The Puig Women’s America’s Cup is therefore a new competition that marks a significant step forward for women in sports. Historically, women had few chances to compete at the highest levels of sailing. While some pioneers made their mark early on, it wasn’t until 1995 that an all-women’s team participated in the America’s Cup. Despite these efforts, women’s representation remained limited, especially with the high-speed, advanced AC75 yachts.

The Puig Women’s America’s Cup aims to change this. With 70 female athletes from 12 countries, including Spain, the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Sweden, and Australia, the event promises to highlight some of the best sailing talent worldwide. Abby Ehler, offshore sailor and event coordinator, emphasized that this initiative provides a crucial platform for female sailors to reach elite levels and inspires young girls to pursue sailing.

The trophy: a symbol of achievement and inclusivity

The trophy for the Puig Women’s America’s Cup is designed by renowned Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola. Made from silver, it stands 58 cm tall and features a unique cylindrical design that opens like a sail caught in the wind. The absence of handles means the winning team can embrace it fully, symbolizing unity and collective achievement.

The competition also exemplifies the importance of inclusivity in sports. By providing a high-profile platform for women, it recognizes their skills and achievements and encourages greater participation and diversity in the sailing community. Puig’s sponsorship and commitment highlights the need for initiatives that break down barriers and create opportunities for women in all levels of competition.

Grant Dalton, CEO of the America’s Cup Event, acknowledged the importance of this partnership with Puig. He stated that the inaugural women’s event is a significant milestone in the history of the America’s Cup and the sport of sailing. The event is expected to be a highlight of the 37th America’s Cup, drawing global attention and setting a new standard for future regattas.

The introduction of the Puig Women’s America’s Cup honours the event’s history and sets a new path for the future. By empowering women and promoting diversity, the competition continues to evolve, reflecting the values of excellence and inclusivity that define the sport.
