Koules Fortress 

This is an impressive fortress that surrounds the harbor of Heraklion which used to guard the entry of the port. The massive fortress was built by the Venetians in the early 13th century, when they conquered the town. Today, the fortress occasionally hosts art exhibitions, plays or concerts. You can visit it every day except for Monday, from 8:30 am to 3 pm in the winter and 7 pm in the summer.

Karteros beach

Crete is not all about history and museums, it’s also about enjoying chill moments by the beach. The vast majority of the island’s best beaches are located far away from the center of Heraklion, but a good option and not far away is Karteros Beach. It’s a vast sandy beach, about 8 kilometers east of the city of Heraklion, equipped with sun beds and beach bars that mainly attracts young visitors.
